A Week at Disneyland
We’ve been on a family trip to Disneyland this week and it’s been a blast. Walt Disney founded the Disney Company 100 years ago. The legacy he left is pretty remarkable. I've been reflecting on some valuable lessons from the Disney experience. Here are the takeaways:
Passion Matters: Walt Disney's passion for creating magic and storytelling led to the creation of Disneyland. Remember to create things in areas you are truly passionate about.
Attention to Detail: Disney excels in customer experience by paying attention to every detail, appealing to all five senses. Apply this to your life - focus on the details in everything you do.
Magic and Fun: Disney's secret sauce is adding a little magic and fun to everything. Inject some joy and creativity into your daily activities.
Have a great week this week!
Five Facets of Health: Week 24
If you're new to the 5 Facets of Health, learn more here. Avoid trying to implement everything at once! These suggestions are meant to spark ideas. To build healthy habits, focus on one or two aspects over the next week.
Physical Health
While being at Disney this week has been fun, it’s wreaked havoc on my diet. It’s crazy how gross I feel after a week of eating processed food and sweets. It’s a good reminder of how important it is to eat a healthy diet with real, whole foods. Make it a priority to eat lots of fruits and vegetables with lean, healthy proteins. Cut out as much sugar and process carbs as you can. I promise you’ll feel better!
“Came from a plant, eat it.; was made in a plant, don’t.”
— Michael Pollan
Action: Commit to a balanced, whole-food-based diet this week.
Mental Health
Disney vacations also take a toll on my sleep. We love to hit the parks early and stay late. It’s a blast, but I can feel I’m not getting enough sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the best things you can do for your mental health. Make getting a full night’s sleep a top priority.
“Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.”
— Thomas Dekker
Action: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
Emotional Health
The best part of this Disney trip has been the memories that have been created through this shared experience with my kids. Quality time and shared experiences make life rich and fulfilling. You don’t have to go to Disneyland to get this benefit. Regardless of what it is, make time to be together and do fun things with you loved ones.
“Share your life with others. You will have a joyful life.”
― Lailah Gifty Akita
Action: Plan a meaningful activity with your loved ones this week.
Spiritual Health
Giving to others is an important spiritual practice that helps us stay humble and remember that we are a part of something much bigger than just ourselves. I find that I am most happy when I have to sacrifice some amount to help others. It helps me keep my priorities straight and keeps my focus on helping others and building relationships with them.
“Happiness doesn’t result from what we get, but from what we give.”
— Ben Carson
Action: Volunteer or perform a random act of kindness.
Financial Health
Whenever we go to Disneyland, I can’t think about what we’re spending for things or it ruins the vacation for me. The key to enjoying the trip is to save in advance the amount we will need to do the things we want. Then, when we’re here, we can just live in the moment and have fun. Save for what you want, and then be present!
“A Man Who Both Spends And Saves Money Is The Happiest Man, Because He Has Both Enjoyments.”
— Samuel Johnson
Action: Create a savings plan for a specific financial goal.
